Amarillo Police Looking for Recruits

The Amarillo Police Department is trying new ways to reach out to the public to sign up for a chance to join.

This includes television commercials and a strong presence on social media. It even started a Facebook page named, “Amarillo Police Department Recruiting”.

Even though they are pushing hard for applicants, they also need the right applicants. Sgt. Brent Barbee says applicants need to be one thing in specific more than anything.
He says, “These are people that are going to have to see things, write reports about it, and testify in court. For that reason, we’ve got to have people that are honest and trustworthy everything.”
The department is currently around 10 officers under what their payroll allows, but Sgt. Barbee says this isn’t different from other departments.

Sgt. Barbee says one of the first things Amarillo Police Chief Ed Drain did after taking the job was expanding the search area of recruits past a 500-mile diameter.

The next police academy begins on May 6. Deadline to sign up is April 28.
