On Tuesday morning, Amarillo Police responded to an accidental shooting at the Wal-Mart at 4215 Canyon Drive.
Officers determined that a man was walking down an aisle inside the store when he shot himself in the abdomen and right leg. Initial information is that no one was around him in the store when the weapon discharged one time. It is not clear yet if the weapon was in a waistband or pocket at the time it discharged.
After the shot, the man fell to the floor. He then got up, put the gun in a nearby trash can inside the store, and left before officers or an ambulance arrived.
The man made his way to a hospital emergency room for treatment. He told officers that a friend drove him to the hospital.
Officers have not yet established what caused the weapon to discharge.
Officers recovered the .357 caliber revolver from the trash can at the store as described by the man. There is no indication that the man has a Texas license to carry a handgun.
The case is under investigation as a weapons offense. Since the injured man is being investigated as a suspect in the case, his name cannot be released.
He was being treated for the non life threatening injury and was not arrested.
