Amarillo Police hosting Chief Jerry Neal Classroom dedication ceremony

On Thursday, April 25th, 2019, at 1:00 PM, the Amarillo Police Department will be hosting a dedication ceremony for the new Chief Jerry Neal Classroom.  Chief Neal served as Chief of the Amarillo Police Department from 1981 until 2007.  He had been Major with the Norman Police Dept, in Norman Oklahoma, prior to coming to Amarillo.  Chief Neal earned a Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Oklahoma City University. He was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
During his time as Chief of Amarillo PD, Chief Neal is credited with many things including creating the Special Crimes Unit and a regional drug task force. He also improved officer training and equipment.  In addition, he is credited with partnering with The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center to give children, who had been abused, a safe environment to tell their stories/experiences/traumas.  The department grew from 234 officers to 312 during his tenure, and many other advances were made as well.
Chief Jerry Neal passed away on April 18, 2018.  The Amarillo Police Department recognizes the importance of Chief Neal’s contribution to the department and the Amarillo community and believes he should be recognized for his many achievements.  The current classroom on the 4th floor has been renovated and will be renamed the Chief Jerry Neal Classroom. It will be dedicated in his honor and also as recognition for his commitment to excellence in training and education.
The ceremony will be held on the 4th floor of the Amarillo Police Department.  We will have a ribbon cutting, and speakers for the ceremony.  The speakers will include Chief Drain, Captain Johnson, and former Assistant Chief’s, Ken Ferguson, Dr. Perry Gilmore and Robert Francis. Members of Chief Neal’s family will also be attending, including his son, Kent Neal, a current Amarillo Police officer.
