Amarillo Bulls, coach Rocky Russo, has had to miss a couple of playoff games this past week.
He and his wife Melissa Russo recently welcomed their first child.
On Wednesday morning the Russos went into the hospital to deliver their daughter.
“It’s been a crazy couple days obviously I was not with the team on the trip to Shreveport. my wife and I welcomed my baby girl.,” Russo said.
Coach Russo soon found out that he was unable to call the shots on this game. Instead, he would have to wait until his daughter arrived.
“I kind of expected the baby to arrive before the game, and all of a sudden it was game time and no baby in sight so I was balancing watching the game and talking to the staff and making sure my wife was well taken care of,” Russo explained.
Russo said his original plan for his wife, newborn, and the team did not exactly go as planned.
“You expect that things are going to go smoothly and it’s going to go in a timely fashion. Pretty much everything that I expected got thrown right out the window,” Russo said.
Players for the Amarillo Bulls said though they were nervous about not having Russo at the Shreveport game, they understood.
“We all know rock wants to be there pretty badly but we all know he can’t because he has things that are obviously more important,” Alex Peterson, Player for the Amarillo Bulls.
The Bulls did their best on the ice and wished a happy birthday to the new addition to the Russo family.
“It was really great. All the guys were extremely excited to hear the good news just best wishes for him and Melissa,” Peterson said.
The game on Sunday, May 5, was against the Shreveport Mudbugs for the South Division Championship.
