AMARILLO, TX - Crews from the Amarillo Fire Department battled a grassfire south of town in Randall County.
Sergeant Danny Alexander with the Randall County Sheriff's Office said a call came in around 2:36 pm Sunday of a grass fire near Lafayette and Georgia, south of his office.
The blaze started moving west, northwest into a field with a lot of tall grass, which Alexander described as a "a lot of good fuel."
The wind was low today and the fire was under control around 4:07 pm.
No injuries were reported.
Crews from the Amarillo, Randall County, Lake Tanglewood, Palisades and Timber Creek Fire Departments responded.
One church, Trinity Fellowship off Hollywood Road, was evacuated because of heavy smoke in the area. (UPDATE: RCSO said they do not know the name of the church that was evacuated this afternoon.)
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and the amount of damage has not yet been calculated.
Western Street was closed from the Loop to Sundown because of smoke and traffic from first responders.
Traffic was backed up because of a lot of onlookers. More crews were called in to help direct traffic.
