UPDATE: One Person Dead Following Officer Involved Shooting in East Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) - UPDATE 7-26 3:36 P.M.:

APD has released the name of the suspect in last night's officer-involved shooting.

Officials say the suspect has been identified as Jose Luis Rodriguez, 23.

Officials tell us as with normal procedure, the officer that was involved has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Special Crimes continues the investigation into the shooting. 





One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in east Amarillo.

On Wednesday, around 8 p.m., APD officers were at the Americas Best Value Inn on the 3900 block of east I-40, looking for a man with a felony warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. 

According to APD, officers observed the man exit a room with a handgun in his hand. 

Officials said the suspect attempted to conceal himself behind other civilians, and would not drop the gun and was shot by an officer. 

The suspect died at the scene.  

No one else was injured. 

The name of the suspect will be released after next of kin has been notified.




UPDATE 9:41 P.M.:

According to Cpl. Jeb Hilton of the Amarillo Police Department, this is the scene of a shooting.

Clp. Hilton said one person is injured.

The Amarillo Police Department is currently responding to the 3900 block of I-40 East.

Our crews says there is an active police scene at Americas Best Value Inn.
