The safety of acne drug Accutane has been debated for years but new research suggests the medication does not increase the risk of depression.
A new study reviewed medical records of more than 38,000 patients and, depression was actually slightly less among patients taking Accutane.
Still, the researchers say the finding should be interpreted along with what clinicians say they know for sure that acne itself is associated with increased risk of mood changes, low self-esteem, and depression.
They say acne patients should maintain open communication with their dermatologists.
The study findings were presented last week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
