Canyon Independent School District is reporting above-average vaccine exemptions last school year.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, 1.66% of the Canyon ISD student population is exempt from vaccinations.
The state average for exemptions is 0.84%.
Health officials say there are lots of reasons to be exempt from immunizations, including allergies and other current treatments.
But despite exemptions, health officials also stress the importance of vaccines, and encourage parents to still have their kids vaccinated.
In comparison, Amarillo ISD has 272 students with exemptions. That sounds like a lot, but that’s only 0.82% of the student population.
