Hooked on Science -Power Behind an Orange

Hooked on Science

IT’S AN AMAZING SCIENCE EXPERIMENT YOU’RE GOING TO WANT TO TRY AT HOME. I’M GOING TO POP THIS OVERINFLATED BALLOON, WITH THE SHARPEST THING I KNOW, AN ORANGE. YOU’RE LIKE, NO WAY, RIGHT? YOU CAN DO IT, I PROMISE, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE BALLOON. THIS BALLOON IS MADE UP OF PIECES TOO SMALL TO SEE. THE SMALLEST UNIT OF MATTER IS AN ATOM. YOU PUT THOSE TOGETHER CHEMICALLY YOU GET MOLECULES. AGAIN, BOTTOM LINE, THIS BALLOON IS MADE UP OF SMALLER PIECES. HOW IN THE WORLD, DO I USE THIS, TO POP THAT? I COULD THROUGH IT AT IT, WHAT IF I MISS AND HIT THE CAMERA PERSON IN THE HEAD? NOT GOOD, RIGHT? I COULD RUB THE TWO OBJECTS TOGETHER, THAT MIGHT CREATE ENOUGH FRICTION TO WEAKEN THE RUBBER OF THE BALLOON AND MAKE IT POP, INSTANTLY, RIGHT? NOPE, BY THE WAY, THE BALLOON, AND THE ORANGE, THEY CAN NEVER TOUCH. THINK ABOUT IT. YOU’RE RIGHT, I CAN USE THE PEELING! WERE YOU THINKING THAT? I’M GOING TO REMOVE THE PEELING FROM THE ORANGE. THEN, I’M GOING TO SQUEEZE THE OIL, IN THE PEELING, ONTO THE BALLOON. PRETEND LIKE THIS IS THE LEGO STRUCTURE YOU’VE SPENT WEEKS ON BUILDING, THIS IS A LITTLE BROTHER OR SISTER THAT COMES INTO THE ROOM. POP! AWESOME RIGHT? THE ORANGE OIL, WHICH IS A SOLVENT, TAKES APART THE SMALLER PIECES OF THE BALLOON AND MAKES IT ALMOST POP INSTANTLY. FOR HOOKED ON SCIENCE, I’M JASON LINDSEY.
