Teacher of the Month: Mr. Hughes

Teacher of the Month
“I nominated Mr. Hughes because he’s one of my favorite teachers and he explains stuff and makes learning fun,”  Caprock High School Student Isaiah Martinez said.

We agreed with Isaiah and figured Mr. Hughes could use a little pick me up.  You see, things haven’t been easy for him during the last couple of months.

“I was riding my bike down in Palo Duro Canyon, and I rode it off one of those bridges,”  Caprock High sophomore English teacher Mike Hughes said.  “I broke my back.  For the past two months, I’ve been in a back brace.”

Two crushed vertebrae later, though, he was back in the classroom.  After all, his sophomores had the STAAR test knocking at the door

“I was freaking out because of the time,”  he said.  “They sent cards and things like that and really touched my heart.”

He’s touched the lives of countless students in the Panhandle.  From Caprock to Boys Ranch, he’s taught everything from speech, to theater, to debate and journalism to English; he’s even coached.  All this, after he left a career in journalism.

“That’s what I want these kids to know,” he said.  “I loved writing for a living.  I was never happier than when I was writing.”
