Women for Wendy Organization in the Panhandle

A non-partisan Panhandle Women for Wendy organization was established last Thursday, on the day Sen. Wendy Davis of Ft. Worth announced she was running for Governor of Texas.
AMARILLO -- Natrelle Long and Kathy Thomas, both of Amarillo, have started and are the co-chair for the Women for Wendy organization. Natrelle Long was an educator and Katy Thomas was a social worker for the State of Texas.

Long said the reason she is co-chairing Panhandle Women for Wendy is, "I was taught from birth that education is the hope of the future. I spent over 45 years in classrooms, as a student and as a teacher. I can no longer stand by quietly when my beloved home state contains more citizens over 25 without high school degrees than any other state."

Long continued, "After 12 years under Governor Perrys leadership, we now have the highest percentage of uninsured adults in the nation, with about one in four people having no coverage of any kind; we are 49th of the 50 states in percentage of uninsured children; we are 46th of the 50 states in health care expenditures per capita and dead last in funding for mental health."

Thomas observed that "Texas women, both Democratic and Republican, are going to find a lot to like about Wendy Davis."

The group is non-partisan and welcomes women from all walks of life.  The group will meet monthly until later in the campaign, she added.  Those interested in joining can call Long at 467-0664, Thomas at 372-5014 or Claudia Stravato at 359-4473.
