(KUSA) Emily Briggs and Nathan Jennings remember the countless adventures they had with their friends, Wiyanna Nelson and Wesley Quinlan.
"They were the most individual, unique, forgiving people I've ever met," Briggs said.
Late Wendesday night, at the very beginning of a days-long rain surge in Colorado, the group of four friends were returning home late at night.
"We're from Colorado. We've never dealt with this much water," Briggs explained. "We had no idea what to expect."
As it became more difficult to drive, Quinlan took the wheel. When the four decided they couldn't go any further, they opted to get out of the vehicle. The force of the water and mud pushed Quinlan, Nelson, and Jennings down the mountain. Briggs scrambled back in the car.
"I just sat in the car, and when I looked up again, I realized everyone was gone. I just realized it was safest for me to stay in the car," she said.
Jennings caught onto a log, and was soon rescued by a firefighter.
Nelson and Quinlan did not survive. Crews found their bodies the next day.
