CANYON -- Gary Barnes, vice president for business and finance at West Texas A&M University, has been named associate vice president for finance and controller at Texas A&M University. He will finish out the year at WTAMU and join the Division of Finance at Texas A&M in January 2014.
As the associate vice president for finance and controller, Barnes will lead and direct financial operations for Texas A&M and be responsible for identifying and analyzing key accounting and financial initiatives.
Barnes has a long history with WTAMU. He graduated in 1978 from what was then West Texas State University and immediately joined the staff as an accountant. He has spent his entire professional career at his alma mater.
"Gary has a long and impressive record of service to the University," Dr. J. Patrick OBrien, WTAMU president, said. "As vice president for business and finance, he has had a hand in all campus construction, renovation and improvements over the past several decades. Through his exemplary leadership, all of the behind-the-scenes business services necessary for the WT to pursue its educational mission have been provided at high levels of efficiency and effectiveness. To say his impact at WT has been significant is an understatement. In large part, the recent successes of WT have been Garys successes. We wish him the best in his new venture. His professionalism, dedication and commitment to WT will be missed."
