The slug bug game is about to get a lot more interestng in the Panhandle. That's because a new Volkswagon dealership is coming to Amarillo.
"We'll be full service Volkswagon store," General Manager John Luciano said, "We'll have everything set up by, for September 16th. Parts, service, sales, used cars. Looking forward to having everybody come by and see us."
The dealership will be run by Street Toyota-Scion. Right now, Luciano and his employees are using a temoporary site, but contruction will begin this winter on the permamnent locatoion on Soncy near the other Stree dealerships.
With just more than a month till opening day, the VW crew is busy.
"Besides total chaos, the point we're at right now would be, we're forty days from opening, in our temporary location on southwest 45th," Luciano said.
Not only will there be more Volkswagons in the Panhandle, there will be more jobs and more money going into the local economy.
"It'll be about a 26,000 square foot building, so right there we'll have an economic impact in construction. And then once they get that, they'll probabyl increase their employment level close to 50 employees. And what's really neat about this - you can tell that's creating jobs, but also it could be growth form there. This is the only Volkswagon dealership between Lubbock and Dallas," Gary Mulberg, Director of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce said.
Econonomic impact aside, these guys know how to have fun too.
They're "calling all slug bugs" for a kick off party on September 15th at the temporary site at Georgia and 45th.
