(NBC News)  The Senate is battling over extending unemployment benefits for the 1.3 million Americans whose checks stopped on December 31st. 

Congress has extended unemployment benefits more than a dozen times over recent years, but this time Republicans are questioning the cost and the need.

Democrats, meanwhile, want a three month extension of benefits.
