Retirement Planning as Couples

To gauge how well couples are communicating about their future, Fidelity Investments® recently completed its fourth Couples Retirement Study. This study is unique in that it tests agreement of both partners in a committed relationship on communication, as well as their knowledge of finances and retirement planning issues. It tests agreement between both married and unmarried couples --young and old.

Women are working harder than ever to advance their careers and break that glass ceiling. Yet, Fidelity's 2013 Couples Retirement Study suggests many are subconsciously imposing a glass ceiling on their financial future, because they do not take the time to focus on financial planning.

Women are making higher salaries today than ever, yet Fidelity's research found women are still more likely than men to doubt their ability to assume full responsibility for the finances if they had to, and routinely defer to their partner to make the decisions. And, of all the generations, Gen X and Gen Y women showed the least amount of confidence in their own financial acumen.
