(KWWL) Teachers and staff at schools in Waterloo, Iowa are preparing for a worst-case scenario as th new school year aproaches.
They're taking part in active shooter drills with the Waterloo police department.
Stephanie Mohorne, principal at Lincoln Elementary, was standing in the hallway when the "shooter" ran into the building. As he got closer, she quickly went into the media center to barricade herself in an office.
"It was frightening, but when you really think about it, to be children in that situation, how frightening that must be," said Mohorne.
The Waterloo Police Department have gone through these situations before, but this is the first time Waterloo schools have involved their teachers and their staff. It's because they want to empower them, and encourage them to make tough decisions.
