The longer the stalemate in Congress drags on, the greater the fear that Republicans will tie the shutdown crisis with the fight to raise the debt ceiling.
The US Government is expected to hit the $16.7-trillion debt ceiling on October 17.
That means the Treasury essentially runs out of money to pay bills unless lawmakers authorize additional financing.
According to a new CNN/ORC poll, 56-percent of Americans said it would be a bad thing if the debt ceiling was not raised.
38-percent feel it would be a good thing for the country.
The majority of those surveyed said it is more important to raise the debt ceiling than to delay Obamacare.
And 53-percent would blame Republicans if the US were to go into default.
The poll was conducted September 27 to 29.
The sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
