Cheerios is going non-GMO.

General Mills says it's now making the original Cheerios without ingredients containing GMO's, or genetically modified organisms.

Some consumers are concerned about the health and environmental impacts of GMO's, although they haven't been proven harmful scientifically.

The main ingredient in original cheerios is oats. GMO oats do not exist yet, the change comes in the sugar and cornstarch.

It only applies to the original flavor Cheerios, and not the other varieties, such as Honey Nut Cheerios.

So what sparked the change?

For the past year, a green economy advocacy group has been rallying consumers on social media to pressure General Mills to remove GMO's from Cheerios.

It targeted cheerios because it's often among the first foods given to toddlers.
