(NBC News) President Obama has called for a cease-fire between Egyptian security forces and supporters of former President Mohammed Morsi.
Speaking at the home where he's vacationing in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, Mr. Obama announced that he has cancelled upcoming joint U.S.-Egyptian military exercises as a result of the deadly clashes that have claimed hundreds of lives.
"We call on the Egyptian authorities to respect the universal rights of the people," the president said. "We call on those who are protesting to do so peacefully and condemn the attacks we've seen by protesters, including on churches."
