(NBC News) Bitter cold doesn't quite describe how brutal the latest round of arctic air descending on the U.S. really is.
Temperatures are below zero with wind chills dipping to -40 in parts of the Upper Midwest. 24 states have declared energy emergencies due to a shortage of propane gas.
Making matters worse, a pipeline explosion south of Winnipeg temporarily cut off natural gas flows over the weekend and left thousands of people without heat in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin.
