Know the Return & Exchange Policy Before You Buy

Laws do protect consumers from misrepresented or defective products. Return policies should be stated by the store, but its up to the consumer to know what those policies are and to realize they can change from store to store.

A policy is often printed in plain sight like on a sales receipt or posted at the cash register. If you don't see the policy, ask for it, read it and understand it before you make your purchase. Keep your receipt and any packaging the item came in.

Exchange - The item may be returned for another (similar) replacement item. This does not apply to all sales final policies or sale items unless stated.

Return for Credit - Customer receives a store credit for the value of the purchased item. Credit can be used the day you return the item or at a later date. Be sure to ask if the credit has an expiration date. 

Refund Policy - The item can be returned for your money back, and most of the time has stipulations such as receipt required, a time limit or items must be new and in original packaging. A refund is voluntary on the stores part and is not required by law.

Restocking Fee - A restocking fee is a fee assessed for the time the item was out of the store and unable to be sold to someone else. A restocking fee is typically deducted from the purchase price of the item and therefore appears to be a return fee on an item that may otherwise be stated as money back guarantee. Make sure you're willing to pay a restocking fee before you make that purchase.

Product Warranties - Product warranties come from the manufacturer. Federal law requires that warranties be available for you to read before you buy a product, even when you're shopping by catalog or on the Internet. Understand the warranty before purchasing the item and read it before returning a defective product to the retailer. Some merchants will return the product for you, however you may have to return the item to the manufacturer or a service center. 

BBB Advice:
·    Know and understand the stores policies before making the purchase.
·    Ask about a restocking fee and get it in writing. The clerk that sold you the item may not be the one at the register when you return it.
·    Keep all receipts and packaging until you're sure the purchase will not be returned.
·    Retailers may adopt some or none of the policies stated above.
·    Health regulations prohibit the return of certain merchandise such as hats or bathing suits.
