The government says the number of people filing for first time unemployment claims fell by a substantial 31,000 last week, to under 300,000.
That's the lowest level since early 2006.
But the Labor Department notes upgrades to computer systems in two states may have triggered this big drop.
And this number will have to be revised in coming weeks.
This is, by the way, the last piece of labor market news before the federal reserve meets to discuss cutting its stimulus program next week.
