"I Don't Think it's More Dangerous than Alcohol"

The President is quoted saying something about the controversial topic of marijuana.
It's a controversial topic that's gained momentum lately, whether to legalize marijuana.

But now a quote by the president about marijuana has many people in our community siding with him.

"I don't think it's more dangerous than alcohol."

That's a quote from President Obama, according to the New Yorker.

"Well, actually the science backs him up.  Research has shown that from a phsycial standpoint as far as addiction levels,  damage to your body and impairment levels, it's actually less harmful for you than alcohol. "

We talked to many people in our community who feel the same way as the president.

"I agree with him.  I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs.  I don't see a problem with it."
"Alcohol is a lot more dangerous.  There's millions of accidents each year, ya know, over the years there has been millions of deaths."

President Obama wasn't condoning smoking marijuana.

Going further in the article he described his use of marijuana in the past, saying it was a mistake he made as a young man.

Proponents of legalization say alcohol is responsible for many car wrecks, including deaths each year in the United States.

Yet it's legal.

"It does seem incongruent for us to regulate one in such a harsh manner where as we let the other generally free flow throughtout society.  It seems like a pretty serious double standard."

Out of everyone we talked with, all  but one agreed with President Obama, but not all would go on camera.

As far as what the future holds when it comes to legalizing marijuana throughout the u-s..

"I think we have to approach it in a much more logical way, just like we did alcohol."
"Eventually i think the federal government is going to have to break down and get behind it."

Less than a month ago, marijuana became legal in Colorado.

It's the only state that allows recreational use of the drug.

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and D.C.

New Mexico is one of those states.
