Home Protection Tips From the Amarillo Police

Officers have investigated 24-28 home burglaries a week in Amarillo in the past few weeks.
AMARILLO -- Police report that last year, there were just over 1700 home burglaries reported in Amarillo.

Officers have investigated 24-28 home burglaries a week in Amarillo in the past few weeks.

Burglars often choose to break in through a back door. Take steps to make your back door resistant to forced entry. Make sure you have good quality deadbolt locks and heavy duty strike plates. Plates that allow you to use 4 to 6 screws that are long enough to attach it to the studs inside the doorway are more secure than standard plates attached with the more common 1 to 2 inch screws.
Help protect the neighborhood by watching for suspicious people that seem to be prowling the area. Watch for cars that are not usually there being left parked near alley entrances.

Keep good records-brand name, item description, and serial numbers of valuables in your home-so that recovered property can be returned, and so that suspects in possession of the property can be prosecuted.
