Hitting the Road

Gathering winter storms could snarl holiday travel in the Northeast and Midwest.
(NBC News)  'Tis the season to travel.

AAA says 94.5 million will pack the roadways and runways during the holidays.

"That's the fifth year in a row of increases and, in fact, it'll be the most people ever traveling for the holidays," points out AAA's Michael Green.

Drivers are getting a gift as they pack up and pull out prices at the pump are the lowest they've been in three years during the holiday season.

Around five-and-a-half million passengers will line up at security gates and load on to planes.

Data from the travel website Kayak.com indicates the most popular destinations this weekend are along the east coast, while the hot spots to spend new year's eve are on the beach in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Still, a line of gathering storms in the Midwest could impact many of those plans.
