Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he wants to pass a minimum wage hike this month.
Reid made the announcement following a closed meeting on the issue with democrats on Capitol Hill.
Most Republicans are expected to oppose the increase, but offer a job creation proposal instead.
Congress last approved a minimum wage hike in 2007.
Right now, the hourly rate is $7.25.
