GRUVER -- After months of debate, the Gruver Police Department is no more. The city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to disband the department, and instead contract with Hansford County Sheriff's Department for patrols in town.

But this isn't new for Gruver. In fact the Sheriff's Office has been patrolling in town for the last few weeks, after both of the officers in the Gruver Police Department resigned earlier this Summer.

This story started back in May, after Mayor Buster Davis proposed disbanding the Police Department, citing budget issues for the town.

According to Mayor Davis, this deal will cost about the same amount it costs to keep a department open in town. Hansford County plans on hiring two more officers for the extra workload. The contract between Gruver and The Hansford County Sheriff's Office will begin in early October, and will last for one year.
