Arizona volunteers, including students and seniors work together to prepare food supplies to victims of deadly typhoon.

(KPNX) Emergency-relief organizations in the Valley and members of the local Filipino community have joined the worldwide relief effort to aid victims of the devastating typhoon that ripped through the Philippines over the weekend.

Feed My Starving Children, which already had teams based in the Philippines, is working to provide extra food assistance and appealing for donations. Barb Harris, a spokeswoman for the organization's local chapter, said volunteers on the ground need 2.5 million meals to help feed the large numbers of homeless people.

"We are working quickly," Harris said. "We are going to (package more meals) at our site, and we are in the process of putting together an event were people in Phoenix can donate and pack a ton of meals."
