Flowers Named LSC Coach of the Year

Seven Buffs are Recognized with Conference Honors.

RICHARDSON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men’s cross country team traveled back home with much heavier bags after competing in the Lone Star Conference Championships in Portales, N.M. on Saturday. After the No. 11 Buffs won their first LSC crown in program history and junior Dylan Doss won the individual title, the team was honored officially with multiple individual awards on Monday. Among those was the LSC Coach of the Year award being given to head coach Darren Flowers.

WT dominated the 8K event held at Blackwater Draw on Saturday with 22-point team score, 45 points ahead of second-place Eastern New Mexico (67 points). Doss was crowned the individual champion as he crossed the line first at 25:28.30.

Junior-transfer Anthony Baumal was honored as the LSC Newcomer of the Year with his second-place overall finish in the meet. Steve Lagat was the first freshman to cross the line (fourth overall) earning him LSC Freshman of the Year honors.

Each of the top-15 finishers from the meet earned LSC All-Conference honors. Besides Doss, Baumal and Lagat, sophomore Lucas Marquez and juniors Baptiste Moreu, Cameron Gifford and Brett Villareal also took home the honors.

Marquez finished in seventh place with a time of 25:58.70 while Moreu crossed next in eighth place at 26:05.70. Gifford would finish 12th and Villarreal at 15th to round out the top-15 spots.

The Buffs will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9, as they host the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Canyon. The event will take place on The Range, WT’s new on-campus cross country course. Starting time for the men’s 10K will be 10:30 a.m. For more information on the event, visit www.GoBuffsGo.com.

“We’ll be stepping up to 10K in the Regional Championships so that is always a challenge but it is at our home course,” commented Flowers. “I think the guys can take this confidence from this race and really compete well there. It’s going to be the best regional in the nation. These guys know that moving on and they have prepared mentally for it so I am really looking forward to seeing them go against some high class competition.”
