Early Sunday Morning Shooting Suspect In Custody

Physical altercation leads to shooting.
AMARILLO -- Early Sunday morning, Amarillo Police were called out to the 3600 block of S. Lipscomb on a shooting.  

The victim was inside the home.  He had what appeared to be a bullet wound in his upper chest.  He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.  The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.  

Officers determined that the victim had been outside the home on the sidewalk when he was shot. Initial information indicates that there had been a physical altercation between the shooting suspect and another man in front of the home some time before the shooting. 

Both men left the home and the suspect returned a short time later.  

There was some type of physical or verbal exchange between the suspect and victim at the front of the home.  The suspect retrieved a handgun from the vehicle and fired one shot, striking the victim.  The suspect then drove away in a black Honda.  

Officers learned that the suspect was at a home in the 5600 block of SW 41st.  There, they found the suspects black Honda with a 9mm handgun in the vehicle.  Officers tried to contact the suspect inside the home.  When they could not contact him by phone, they called APD SWAT to assist in securing the home. 

Officers were finally able to contact the man by phone and He came out of the home at 7:15 a.m. and was taken into custody.  

He was identified as 30-year-old Robert Louis Bennett.  

Bennett was booked into Randall County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.  They also secured a search warrant for the home and vehicle on 41st and recovered the 9mm handgun from the vehicle.   

Investigators have not released information on the initial cause of the dispute.
