LUBBOCK -- Amarillo plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Michael Dixon could be put to death if convicted in the death of former Lubbock pathologist Dr. Joseph Sonnier.

The Lubbock County DA filed paperwork with the court three weeks ago claiming the state will seek the death penalty.

Meanwhile, the DA also filed a list of expert witnesses to testify for the prosecution.

Among those slated to testify, gang experts with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office.

They're expected to testify that Dr. Dixon's tattoos are gang related and that his actions are consistent with gang activity.

Dr. Dixon is accused of hiring his long time friend to kill Dr. Sonnier because he was dating Dixon's ex-girlfriend.

The convicted killer, David Shepard, made a deal with prosecutors earlier this year. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
