CANYON, Texas – By a 13-12 margin, West Texas A&M defeated Midwestern State in the inaugural First United Bank Highway 287 Challenge for the 2013-14 year.
The Highway 287 Challenge is a yearlong collegiate athletics competition between WT and MSU. It is presented by First United Bank and uses a point system in which each school earns points based on head-to-head athletic competition.
WT earned points this season in volleyball, football, women’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s golf and softball postseason. MSU earned points in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s basketball, softball regular season, men’s golf and softball postseason.
"The rivalry between WT and MSU is fun and entertaining for our teams, student bodies, communities and alumni. As we've seen in the past, the games not only have an impact on the Lone Star Conference but nationally as well” said WT Athletic Director Michael McBroom. “The Challenge Cup is a great way for us to enhance the competition and promote good sportsmanship between two schools that mutually respect one another."
Throughout the school year, fans were able to visit www.highway287challenge.com to track progress and see point totals for their school. The site now displays final point totals and itemizes each school’s points earned.
