Vigilant Neighbor Helps Catch Burglar

The APD investigated 26 reported home burglaries that happened all over Amarillo last week.
AMARILLO - Amarillo Police say "an alert neighbor noticed a strange white Ford pickup parked near a home on 300 block of N. Virginia. The neighbor knew the vehicle didn’t belong there and that the residents weren’t home. He notified the resident, who came home and found a suspect walking out of his home."

Amarillo Police were originally called out Wednesday to a home in the 3000 block of SW 7th on report that a victim had followed a burglary suspect after catching the suspect burglarizing his home.

Officers later found that the suspect had entered the home on N. Virginia by breaking out a rear window. The home owner told officers that when he tried to stop the man that walked out of his home, the suspect got into a white Ford pickup and drove away.

The burglary victim followed the pickup to the address on SW 7th . The suspect parked the vehicle in the car port and ran into the house.

Officers got permission to search the suspects house. Inside, they found an access door to a crawl space under the house. Officers used a police canine unit to get the suspect out of the crawl space.

Officers searched the crawl space and found jewelry reported stolen from the home on N. Virginia. They searched the suspect’s pickup and found property taken in a burglary in the 400 block of S. Independence earlier in the day.

The suspect had taken duffle bags containing books and other personal property. The suspect, Rudy Jose Gonzales Jr., 33, was booked into the Potter County Detention Center for two counts of burglary of a habitation.
