AMARILLO -- An additional sales tax, affecting many people in our area will be on the ballot this November.
It will be a two percent sales tax increase for unincorporated areas.
Potter Commissioner Leon Church tells us the Bushland area; River Road, Highland Park and anything west of Soncy are the main areas affected.
Yesterday, Potter County Commissioners passed a resolution to form a "County Assistance District."
Meaning people can vote to create an additional sales tax on items only in that district.
In this case, District 3.
The current sales tax within city limits is 8.25-percent.
In the unincorporated areas, it is 6.25 percent.
Commissioner Church tells us “the funds will be used very limitedly”.
The tax money will go towards law enforcement, road and bridge expenses and firefighter equipment; with firefighter equipment being the focus.
He says a lot of the equipment is more than 15-years-old.
This not only affects a numerical rating from insurance organizations, but Church says it also causes people's insurance premiums in these unincorporated areas to go up.
Only people in unincorporated areas will be voting on this new tax.
