Two Arrested for Drag Racing Near Caprock High School

An officer was on 34th Avenue when he checked the speed of two westbound vehicles travelling side- by-side in the 2500 block of SE 34th at 71 MPH.
AMARILLO -- Amarillo Police were called out Thursday at 3 p.m. to  the area of Caprock High School due to reports of a reckless driver around the school. 

An officer was on 34th Avenue when he checked the speed of two westbound vehicles travelling side- by-side in the 2500 block of SE 34th at 71 MPH.

The officer stopped both vehicles near 34th and Philadelphia, just east of 34th and S. Osage. 

Ricardo Luis Salazar, 17, was arrested for two city traffic warrants (speeding and no driver’s license) and racing. 

Alexis Sanchez, 17, was arrested for the same racing charge. 

Both drivers were booked into the Randall County Jail. 

The speed limit in front of Caprock High School on SE 34th is 45 MPH when the school zone signal is not activated. 

A conviction for drag racing can carry a a sentence of up to 180 days in jail, a fine of up to $2000, or both, and a one-year suspension of the convicted driver’s license.
