Top Ranked Lady Buffs Ready to Host LSC Softball Championship This Weekend in Canyon

Coming off of the program’s first outright regular season Lone Star Conference Championship this past weekend, the top ranked Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are set to host the 2014 LSC Championship this weekend at Schaeffer Park in Canyon

CANYON -- Coming off of the program’s first outright regular season Lone Star Conference Championship this past weekend, the top ranked Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are set to host the 2014 LSC Championship this weekend at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. WT has earned a bye in the quarterfinal round and they will face-off with the Midwestern State/Cameron winner on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. with the Title Game happening on Saturday at 2 p.m.

LIVE COVERAGE

As part of the league's partnership with the Comcast SportsNet Houston regional sports network, the championship game Saturday will be aired live on the CSN Houston. The title game will be available via live web streaming as well at http://www.csnhouston.com/page/live. In addition, all four games on Friday will be web streamed live. The webcasts are available free of charge. WHAT’S AT STAKE

The 2014 Lone Star Conference Tournament Champion will be crowned on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 2 p.m. in Canyon. The winner of the tournament will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Softball Postseason. The NCAA Division II postseason field is set for release on Monday, May 5 at 9 a.m. via an online selection show on NCAA.com.

WEST TEXAS A&M

The #1 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M ran their program record win streak to 23 games while claiming the team’s second Lone Star Conference Championship this past weekend with a four game sweep of then #7 Angelo State at Schaeffer Park in Canyon during Military Appreciation Weekend. The Lady Buffs enter the weekend with an overall record of 50-4. The Lady Buffs have received a bye in the quarterfinal round of the LSC Tournament and they will play the winner of Midwestern State and Cameron in the Semifinal round on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Schaeffer Park.

THE OPPONENTS

The Mustangs of Midwestern State enter the weekend with an overall record of 28-21 as they finished the regular season with a 16-11 mark in league play to sit in fourth place heading into this weekend’s LSC Tournament. Midwestern State is led offensively by Katelyn Vinson who is hitting .405 with seven doubles and 10 homeruns to drive in 45 runs, Kelley Schaefer is hitting .368 with 11 doubles and nine homeruns to drive in 44 RBI while defending NFCA National Hitter of the Week Katy Vandewater leads the team with 50 RBI. Katlyn Holmes leads the way for the Mustangs in the circle with a 4.64 ERA, going 11-10 with 14 complete games and a save while striking out 74 batters and allowing an opposing batting average of .304.

The Aggies of Cameron University enter the week with an overall record of 29-18 with a 15-12 mark in the Lone Star Conference to finish league play in fifth place following winning one-of-three against TWU this past weekend. Cameron is led offensively by Tara Martini who is hitting .395 with 17 doubles and 10 homeruns to drive in a team leading 57 RBI followed by Misty Dooley with a .364 average with five doubles and three triples to drive in 18 runs on the season. Kelsey Watson leads the way for the Aggies in the circle with a 3.28 ERA, going 15-10 with 15 complete games and three saves while striking out 109 batters and allowing an opposing batting average of .246 in her 153.2 innings of work this season.

WALK THIS WAY

The 2013 season saw the Lady Buffs register an NCAA Division II single-season record 310 base-on-balls to break the record of 288 held by Barry University that was set back in 1988. Senior shortstop Alyssa Lemos registered a team record 46 walks during the 2013 season to break the record held by Meghan Brown (45) back in 2012, Lemos passed Brown to become the all-time NCAA DII career leader in walks during last Saturday afternoon’s opener against Angelo State with her 169th career walk.

HOME SWEET HOME

The Lady Buffs played 29 games at Schaeffer Park in the regular season including 13 of those coming in Lone Star Conference action. The Lady Buffs carry a perfect 29-0 record at Schaeffer Park into the postseason. WT is 102-16 (.860) at Schaeffer Park since the facility opened prior to the 2011 season.

NATIONALLY SPEAKING

Entering the weekend, the Lady Buffs ranked first in all of NCAA Division II in homeruns per game (1.69), on-base percentage (.474), slugging percentage (.665) and win/loss percentage (.926) while second in scoring (8.74) and fourth in doubles per game (2.06) and fielding percentage (.977). Individually, senior shortstop Alyssa Lemos is sixth in walks per game (0.85) while Rita Hokianga is 11th in strikeouts (219) and 16th in victories (21) with Renee Erwin ranking eighth in individual slugging percentage (.956) and ninth in batting average (.481) while Erwin and Jessica Sipe are tied for 10th in homeruns (17). The national rankings reflect games played thru Sunday, April 27th.
