Age 18 makes them a legal adult, but research shows us that the decision-making brain is still developing until age 26.
 
As your teen grows into young adulthood, adjust engagement to more communicative/less directive.

Your young adult still needs help in processing and healthy decision-making. (Help them weigh the pros and cons.)

They are still kids to some degree: risky behavior must be addressed and adult consequences explained…not a game anymore! 

Consider punishments such as taking away the car keys, iPhone or stopping allowance if it is being used for illegal things (drugs, alcohol).
