AMARILLO--

Large crowds are filing into stadiums and the sound of marching bands is wafting through the air.

This can only mean one thing..the return of high school football.

Panhandle High School Football Fan Max Reno says "This is the best time of the year. The juices are flowing...everybody's ready to roll."

AISD Athletic Director Brad Thiessen says "The beginning of football season is always exciting. It's a new season, it's a new school year and kids are excited to get back to school."

According to Thiessen, players and fans aren't the only ones that have been waiting for the season to start.

Thiessen says "It's exciting for the coaches. My first trip down there, you know, I told one of the coaches that coached with me in Stratford, I said 'We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto.' I mean, this was a different deal. There was a lot of people here. It's a neat atmosphere and it's a neat place."

Thiessen says even though generally each football season is similar to the previous ones...fans might see a few changes this time around.

Thiessen says "There's a new 40 second clock instead of just the 25 second clock. That's an NCAA rule that Texas has been exempt on the UIL side of it. The UIL has now adopted it  so we're working on the 40 second clock."

Even with a few changes, some fans say the game itself is exciting...and that will never change.
Reno says "This is just kind of Americana. I mean, it's going to be just like it was in '84 when we played for the state championship. You know, everybody's ready to roll. We might do it again, you never know."

Something else different that fans will see are changes to the districts.

Amarillo High will now join Tascosa, Coronado, Monterey and Frenship in the new 6A district.

Schools like Caprock and Palo Duro will now play at the 5A level.
