NEW ORLEANS, La. – Seven women and three men from the West Texas A&M University track & field program were honored Tuesday night as recipients of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Individual awards. Additionally, the Lady Buffs earned All-Academic team honors for the 2014 track & field season.
Representing the Lady Buffs with academic honors are junior Rhemecka Graham (3.71, business management), sophomore Mireia Guarner (3.63, sports and exercise science), senior Marisa Holiwell (3.68, graphic design), sophomore Bri Leeper (4.00, mass communications-broadcasting), junior Malika Ouedraogo (3.60, mass communications-public relations), sophomore Libby Strickland (3.88, pre-nursing), and junior Jessie Thomas (3.53, health sciences).
For the Buffs, sophomore Paul Alongo (3.26, marketing), junior Arnau Erta (3.33, mass communications-broadcasting), and junior Baptiste Moreu (3.67, finance) made the list.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have reached a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons.
The Lady Buffs also earned recognition as a team, joining 104 other women’s Division II programs in the nation. The women achieved an outstanding combined 3.30 GPA in 2013-14.
The WT men's and women's track & field and cross country programs recently completed an unprecedented combined 2013-14 season. This past season saw the program’s first Lone Star Conference Championships in men’s cross country, men’s indoor track & field, and women’s indoor track & field. Additionally, WT brought home seven indoor/outdoor track & field All-Americans. Upon conclusion of the athletics year, the Buffs and Lady Buffs garnered their highest national finishes ever in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year Rankings. The women finished eighth while the men were 15th in the field consisting of all NCAA Division II institutions.
