The sounds of the holidays are all too familiar. Christmas songs blasting over speakers, the hustle and bustle of shopping, and the not-so-quiet sound the WT football team makes when it barely sneaks into the playoffs.
This Thursday, as you’re preparing a turkey feast for Thanksgiving, the WT football team will be doing what it has always wanted to do on Thanksgiving: practice football.
Back on November 2nd it seemed as if the Buffs would be headed separate directions for the Thanksgiving holiday. The dream of making the playoffs seemed to dissipate faster than a 38-17 lead over Eastern New Mexico. The Buffs lost that game 39-38 and with it, they lost hope of making the playoffs, at least momentarily.
But thanks to a few good breaks and two well-played games to finish the season, WT will be traveling to Ohio to play a team that has yet to lose a game this year.
Read that last sentence again. Does it sound familiar? It should.
You see last year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Buffs traveled to Ashland, Ohio to take on undefeated Ashland University. The Buffs won 33-28.
This year the Buffs will travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on undefeated Ohio Dominican.
At the beginning of November the Buffs were down and out. Everyone though the playoffs were out of the question.
Instead, for the second straight year, WT made it into the playoffs as the sixth seed, took a long out-of-state road trip in round one, and came home victorious.
Now, the Buffs are one of just 16 teams still alive in the Division II playoffs.
And if they get a win Saturday against an unbeaten team from the state of Ohio, it will be a storyline that sounds very familiar.
