(NBC News) Fugitive National Security Administration contractor Edward Snowden spoke Monday to attendees at Austin's SXSW music festival via internet video conference.
During the discussion Snowden appeared with an image of the U.S. Constitution in the background; the signal was routed through several proxies in order to hide his exact location.
Snowden fled the United States last year after leaking classified government surveillance documents to the media, and was eventually granted temporary asylum in Russia.
He told those gathered for the address that the NSA is putting the future of the internet in danger, saying it's important to let people know when their personal data is being collected.
