Excitement for High Plains football is at an all-time high. But the number of referees are dwindling.

Excitement for High Plains football is at an all-time high. But the number of referees are dwindling.

According to the Texas Association of Sports Officials, the number of football officials in our area is down 35%, which could present problems in the fall.

However TASO says anyone with a passion for football could help keep the action going on the field.

"So anybody that just loves the game, like to get out on friday nights. Like to help the kids," said President of the Amarillo TASO Chapter Mark Vogler. "Just remember that somebody had to do it for us to play so you know needing to take our turn and get out there and help the kids."

If you'd like to get involved, you will have to provide your own referee attire.

Items include:

Uniform - Football black pants, officials shirt & hat, black belt, black shoes.

Equipment - Whistle & lanyard, bean bag, down indicator.
