AMARILLO -- Dry conditions continue on the High Plains. But there could soon be a break in the state's historic drought.

A report by the National Weather Service in Amarillo shows an 'El Nino' could be forming, which could mean lots of rain for the Panhandle.

Chief Meteorologist John Harris say El Nino's take place when humid air mixes with the atmosphere, and migrates up to the Panhandle.

However, conditions were right for an  El Nino last year as well. The phenomenon never occurred, and Harris says meteorological experts still aren't sure why it didn't happen.
