Police Investigating Smokey Joe's Texas Cafe Shooting

A 49-year-old man identified himself to officers as being involved and disclosed that he was in possession of the .380 caliber handgun he used in the incident. He told officers that he fired in self-defense after the suspect attacked him, knocked him down, and was striking him in the face repeatedly with his fist.
AMARILLO -- Police are investigating a shooting at Smokey Joe’s Texas Café at 2903 W. 6th.

Police were called out Wednesday at 5:36 P.M.

Police found a 37-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.  

Officers learned that he had been shot by another man who was still present on the lot.  

This 49-year-old man identified himself to officers as being involved and disclosed that he was in possession of the .380 caliber handgun he used in the incident.  He told officers that he fired in self-defense after the suspect attacked him, knocked him down, and was striking him in the face repeatedly with his fist. 

Officers investigating interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance camera video of the shooting. The man was interviewed by detectives and released pending additional investigation and referral of the case to the 47th District Attorney’s Office.  

The wounded man was taken to the hospital by ambulance. His injury was initially believed to be life-threatening, but his condition has improved and is not now considered life-threatening.
