Plasma: A Real Lifesaver

Plasma: A Real Lifesaver

Medical experts show how a plasma infusion is what helped to save Cpl. Josh Hargis' life.
(WOAI) One of the iconic pictures to surface out of the war in Afghanistan wouldn't have been possible if not for this life-saving substance which is being tested in San Antonio, Texas.

The image in question is of a wounded Army Ranger Corporal Josh Hargis saluting his senior officers as he is awarded a Purple Heart lying wounded in his hospital bed.

Hargis was given a precious powder which contains proteins that were able to clot the blood and help stop the bleeding from wounds he sustained during combat.

"This is human plasma that has had all the water sucked out in the freeze drying process," explained United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Cap.
