Newborn Baby Found Alive in Dalhart Dumpster Saturday

Officials say the baby was in critical condition when they found him and “As of noon today, the baby is holding on with no change”.

DALHART -- Dalhart Police report that a resident found a newborn baby boy in a dumpster around nine o'clock Saturday night.

The resident found the child in the corner of the dumpster in the 1800 block of Oak Street. 

Officials say the baby was in critical condition when they found him and “As of noon today, the baby is holding on with no change”.

Police believe the child to have been in the dumpster 5 to 6 hours. The child is at the Northwest hospital NICU. 

Police arrested the mother, 21-year-old Shonnie Smalley, at 5 a.m. Sunday. Smalley is in the Dallam/Hartley County Jail. 

She faces one charge of injury of a child, a 1st degree felony. Her bond is set at $50,000. If the child dies, the suspect will be charged with murder.
