OKLAHOMA CITY – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M used a run to the program’s first ever National Championship to claim the top spot in the final 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Friday afternoon from ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma during the 2014 Division I College World Series.
West Texas A&M picked up all 16 first-place votes for the unanimous selection with a total of 400 points followed by National Runner-Up Valdosta State with 384. College World Series participants Dixie State (360), Southeastern Oklahoma (352) Armstrong Atlantic (341), West Chester (316), Wayne State (308) and LIU-Post (291) rounded out the top-eight followed by St. Mary’s (249) and North Georgia (237). The South Central Region was represented by WT (1st), St, Mary’s (9th), Angelo State (16th) and Texas Woman’s (RV).
The Lady Buffs claimed the program’s first ever National Championship on Memorial Day as WT and Valdosta State took a pitcher’s duel scoreless into the seventh inning before sophomore second baseman Brittany Gehle played the hero with a three run homerun with two outs as WT held on to claim the win, 3-2. The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
