(NBC News) At least eight people are dead and 18 more are missing after a massive mudslide tore through a residential community in Washington State Saturday, leaving behind a swath of devastation.
Rescuers resumed searching for victims Sunday after after geologists said it was safe.
The search has been hampered by dangerous conditions in the oozing mud, and officials aren't sure how many more victims they might find in the days ahead.
"We have a road there. That road is buried in a mile of this muck. There may be people in their cars," warned Snohomish County Fire Chief Travis Hots.
