TUCUMCARI -- A medical helicopter registered to Tri-State CareFlite crashed about 2:48 a.m. Mountain Time this morning in rugged terrain near Newkirk, N.M.
The aircraft departed from Santa Fe and was flying to Tucumcari to pick up a patient.
The helicopter was carrying a pilot and two crew members. No patients were on board.
The burning wreckage was located by a rancher on private property. The aircraft was destroyed in the accident.
New Mexico State Police are on site in an attempt to recover bodies.
FAA investigators are expected to arrive at the site today. The National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation and all updates on its progress.
